CAMRA campaigns to protect and promote clubs, which are important community assets that promote the social well being of their local area.
The Club of the Year competition is run in conjunction with Club Mirror magazine with the simple aim of finding the best clubs with the greatest commitment to quality real ale – those which offer a fantastic atmosphere, welcoming surroundings and most importantly, top quality real ale served in great condition.
After being named West Midlands Regional Club of the Year three years in a row, this is the first time the Firs Club has won the top award in the Club of the Year competition.
The multi-award-winning social club is a must visit for cask beer fans, with an onsite microbrewery opened in 2017 which features in its November festival - a real highlight in the local beer calendar. Firs Brewery has been featured in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide and produces a core range of ales, including some exclusives for the club. As well as Firs beers, the bar offers five locally sourced ever-changing cask beers, usually including one mild.
Clubs in the competition are selected by CAMRA volunteers and judged on their atmosphere, decor, welcome, service, value for money, customer mix and most importantly – quality of beer.
Since 1884 The Haydock Reading Room has provided a warm and welcoming place for all who like a drink with good company.
A popular club tucked away close to Rockingham Road Pleasure Park. In addition to the long public bar, it has a small sunken lounge area, a separate games area, and a large concert room.
Completely renovated in 2017 to produce a light, airy, and friendly atmosphere, this Grade II listed community hub boasts six real ales generally from local microbreweries and a snooker and darts teams for its members.
