One of the oldest pubs in York, located on one of its busiest shopping streets, it is popular with tourist and locals alike. There are three distinct areas all served by a central bar, an airy front section, drinking corridor and cosy rear area with wooden beams and fireplace.

Much of the décor of the (altered) front tap room and entrance areas derives from a prestige Tudor-style restoration of 1930 by the local Tadcaster Tower Brewery. This was one of their three major inter-war projects in central York with a specific accent on ‘historic character’ (the others being the rebuilding of the Masons Arms and the remodelling of the medieval Black Swan)
