Historic Interest

Listed in Kill St. (1830, 1839 & 1840) & Cemetery Rd. in later 19th century. A report in the Ipswich Journal*** on 26 Oct in 1869 states that : "The licensed Vctuallers Tea Association advertised the sale of tea via its Suffolk Agents. This was a response to the irregular sale of Wine by Grocers & included a reference to W. SPOONER of the Maid's Head Inn, Mildenhall". A report in the Bury & Norwich Post** on Aug-05 in 1879 when Adelaide & Jeremiah Morley were the landlord & landlady states that : "John Bassett stole an Ulster Coat & a pair of slippers the property of Frederick Matten. Matten had left the coat at the Maids Head in the safe keeping of the landlady, Bassett took the coat claiming he had won it in a game of toss. He was found guilty of theft & given 3 months hard labour." A report in the Ipswich Journal** on Jul-22 in 1887 when Charles Peachey was the landlord states that : "Simeon Fenton, a furniture dealer, had bought by auction a number of items from the late estate of Maharajah Dhulap Singh of Elveden. He was in the process of moving the furniture by hired van when it was stopped by the police. The police were interested in the true ownership of some of the items. The wagon was unloaded, & according to the landlord Charles Peachey, the items were placed in the Maids Head Clubroom."
