This atmospheric bar in the basement of a Grade II-listed building has an exquisite ornate carved stone exterior in a historic area which has been used as a film set. It has a mixture of comfortable seating and a fine ambience. There is regular live music and charity fundraising events, especially for Kirkwood Hospice. The upstairs function room seats up to 40. It is the easternmost pub on the Transpennine Rail Ale Trail. Buses 112,119,212,120,122,281 are nearest. At street level to the left of the pub entrance there are a pair of outdoor tables which customers are welcome to use, offering a suntrap for visitors.
