CLOSED since Covid Lockdown March 2020. Site reported Oct 2020 sold subject to contract.

Planning app 2021/03522/FUL Demolition of the existing building except retention of existing front and side facades; and erection of a 3 storey plus basement hotel and reprovision of public house. (117 documents). Accepted by Council as at Jan 2023 and as at July 2023 it was reported that demolition works had started. From supporting documents it is possible the new pub may revert to being named The Rifle.

This is West Berkshire's first foray into London via their pub operating arm Maverick Pubs. There are large windows giving a light and airy feel to the comfortably-furnished interior. It has been lightly gastrated since its GK days. The food offering includes Sunday roasts. Close to both the Charing Cross Hospital and the Eventim (formerly Hammersmith) Apollo (formerly Odeon) live music venue.

Historic Interest

The 1865 OS Map shows the public house located at the corner of Distillery Lane. Census records of 1861 confirm Thomas Gibbs as a ‘Retailer of Beer’ at the location. It is hence likely that the pub has been in its current location at least since 1861. The pub was almost certainly built as the local taproom for the large distillery constructed by H & J Haig in the late 1850s, on the site of the original Brandenburg house. From the early 1950s the pub was owned by the Mancini brothers boxing family and later became a popular venue for boxing matches. At this point the pub was renamed ‘The Golden Gloves’.
