Historic Interest

The building dates back to 1670 (according to the date stone). There was a brewery to the west of the pub with James Bradburne listed as brewer in Pigot’s Directories of 1822-23 and 1828-29. The brewery together with the pub (from the estate of James Bradburn) was put up for sale by auction on 27 April 1838. The pub was listed in Pigot's Directory of 1822-23 and 1828-29, in Bagshaw's Directory of 1850 and mentioned in Sulley’s 1889 ‘The Hundred of Wirral’ as one of the 11 fully licensed pubs in Neston. Acquired by Argyle Brewery by 1865 (later Birkenhead Brewery in 1867). The old photo shows the pub in 1911. Described in 1980 as a small three roomed traditional local serving Whitbread Special Cask Bitter by handpump.
