Dolphin, Thorpeness

Directions

You want to visit - You have this in

The pub has a reputation for good food. It has a large garden and accommodation.

There is a toilet accessible to disabled customers.

There's also a village shop on the premises.

The current building replaced another pub (of the same name) that was destroyed by fire in 1996. The modern name of the pub comes from the logo of the local golf club, which appears on the pub sign.

Historic Interest

The previous building - also called Dolphin - was opened in 1914 as part of the redevelopment of the hamlet into a holiday village. It was destroyed by fire in 1996. The earlier Dolphin pub replaced a beerhouse called the Crown that was also located on the same site & can also be seen on the 1882 OS map. Originally only licensed as a beerhouse, the Dolphin got its full licence on April 14th 1927. A paperback book published in 1969, called "Inns of the Suffolk Coast" by Leonard P Thompson** contains the following extract: From 1913 the Dolphin went on lease to Adnams & Co…for a period of 14 years. In 1927, Thorpeness Estates Limited took over the management & obtained a full licence. In the following year, a row of 5 cottages to the east side of the Dolphin were demolished & a new wing was erected. Since then, additions & improvements have been made from time to time, to give Thorpeness a 2 star hotel which is pleasantly in keeping with its surroundings & a worthy amenity to this delightful & unique seaside resort.
