This Pub is Permanently Closed
Large comfortable locals' pub. Dates back to at least 1782, when an inquest at the inn was reported in the Ipswich Journal. Closed at end of September 2011 - reputedly sold to developers - so future may now be in some doubt - please let us know if you have any new information. Historic Interest
A report in the Ipswich Journal** in Jan 1820 states that : Lately, died, Mr William Button, of the Compasses, Romford, formerly of the Angel Inn, Bramford. A report in the Ipswich Journal** in 1853 (Mar-26) when Ann Rogers was wife of the landlord sadly states: "Francis Flory & his wife Susan had been drinking in the Angel on the night of the 24th August 1853, he returned home after his wife at 22.45. Their daughter then witnessed her father strike his wife twice around the head. Susan died the next morning having been found in bed & insensible by the doctor. Francis was tried & found guilty & sentenced to 1 year in jail."
