Historic Interest
Some of the building dates from the 16th century, with much subsequent work. A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 03 Jun in 1837 stated that Robert Koipe COBBOLD of the Eye Brewery was retiring from business & was looking to sell various Inns & Public Houses including the Angel, Debenham. Photographs of this pub and more historical information about it can be found at suffolk.camra.org.uk/pub/231
Active Campaign
The Angel closed in 2019 after various campaigns to keep it open and try to work with the owners to preserve the pub for the village. Since 2019 there have been three planning applications for change of use to housing all of which have been refused (see this BBC article). A community group has formed Debenham Angel Community Ltd, a Community Benefit Society and have plans to raise funds through a community share share scheme, application for grants, and potential loans if needed, to bid to purchase the pub, refurbish and equip it, See the group's website for more details.
