Reoened on 7 June 2025 after 12 year closure. The pub has been fully modernised but also retains much character from the original building.

Historic Interest

A report in the Bury & Norwich Post** on Dec-26 in 1838 states that the pub was sold to Mr S. Piggens as part of the Samuel Alexanders Brewery sale, the George selling at ÂŁ700. A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 18 Mar in 1848 states that George Inn, Wickham Market for sale (no occupier noted) An advert in the The Bury & Norwich Post**** on Tue 13 March 1866 lists this pub as part of the sale of Stonham Brewery together with 26 other premises. Grade II Listed.

A Community Benefit Society was set up in December 2016 to acquire, restore and reopen The George.. For further details, including more historical background, see www.wmgeorge.co.uk. In September 2018 it was announced that the group had succeeded in buying the pub.

Pub almost completely destroyed by fire 2013. A Community Benefit Society (The George Community Pub (Wickham Market) Limited) was setup in 2016 to acquire, restore and reopen The George. They were awarded ÂŁ195,000 from the Community Ownership Fund. They completed the purchase in 2018. The pub has been restored and will reopen in the Spring of 2025.
