This Pub is Closed Long Term

Originally opened as a coaching inn on the main road between Newcastle and Carlisle it had stables, for six horses, which still survive to the rear of the pub. It became a 'Jerry' pub in the 1830's. When Carlisle's pubs were nationalised, due to the high levels of drunkenness, in became the first Free house outside the State Management scheme when traveling east from the city, on the A69, all produce is locally sourced. The low beam just inside the front door catches many taller people out so remember to duck on entering.
