A wharfinger is a term for a person who is the keeper or owner of a wharf, so it is unsurprising that the Wharfinger was right next to Ash Wharf, on the Basingstoke Canal between Ash Vale and Ash. The pub was originally opened as The Bridge House around 1860 and was a popular venue for gipsy weddings and funerals. Before it closed in August 1983, it was something of a real ale oasis in the area. Since then the site has been used as a display area of used cars by Tolleys Of Ash and more recently redeveloped as the showroom for Vale Furnishers.
