This Pub is Closed Long Term
Don't be put off by the name! This unusual pub is a sight to be beholden, being located down a short well lit alley opposite Canadian Avenue. The former Conservative Club closed in 1996 and re-opened in November 2013 retaining many original features. The single bar and restaurant area features a large chandelier hanging from the bare rafters. A quirky assortment of old furniture, pictures, framed Private Eye covers and mirrors creates a unique atmosphere which could be described as “shabby-chic”. Weekly pub quiz on Tuesday, there are monthly comedy events and film nights are held on the last Sunday of each month. Open mic nights every Monday. Baronial style staircase leads to the upstairs toilets and to a further seating area which opened in June 2014. 6 handpumps. Seems always to be a work in progress. Since early summer 2019 there has been a threat to the future of this venue from potential site re-development. Local petitions have been drawn up and councillors have been lobbied, many of whom use the pub before / after council meetings!
