Spacious modern single bar Wetherspoon pub opened in 2000 on the ground floor of a large apartment block, converted from a Grade II listed 1960s Government office complex, which had been constructed on the site of buildings bombed during WWII. They included the original 19th century pub of the same name, and an imposing department store founded by Wm Tarn & Co. Pictures of the store and examples of the goods and millinery sold there in Victorian times hang on the walls. Note also the bespoke replica period furniture including hat box drum stools.
The pub is named after Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham (1730-1782), a wealthy Whig and landowner who served twice as Prime Minister during the reign of King George III. He was passionate about horse racing and breeding and pictures of him and a sketch of his prize-winning horse Whistlejacket, also adorn the walls.
Located in the heart of the Elephant & Castle, the pub draws a mixed and lively crowd. Alcohol is served from 9am.
