97 Derby Road, Stapleford, NG9 7AA (View on Google Map)

Named after Stapleford's celebrated son - its former MP, international diplomat and celebrated Naval war admiral. A large cannon greets upon entering and paintings of naval battles are accompanied by other nautical decorations. Even the toilets feature portholes for mirrors and windows. Situated on the site of the former Stapleford Health Centre, medicine bottles pressed into the bar-front and across the back shelving offer a throwback to locals. Meals are the usual Wetherspoon menu as is seating and layout. Unusually, the kitchen counter is opened up allowing diners a greater glimpse into meal preparation. Outside a patio style seated area 'opens' up the pub in warmer weather.

Historic Interest

Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren (1753-1822) was born in Stapleford and had a distinguished career as an officer in the Royal Navy, diplomat (St. Petersburg) and as an MP (Great Marlow, Nottingham and Buckingham). Believed by many to be the inspiration for Patrick O'Brien's popular fictional naval hero, Jack Aubrey. Warren held the following official positions: Midshipman RN 1777; Lt. 1778; Commander 1779; Captain 1781; half-pay Captain 1783; groom of bedchamber to Duke of Clarence 1787-d.; Read-admiral 1799; Privy Council 1802; ambassador to Russia Sept. 1802-Nov. 1804; Vice-admiral 1805; Commander-in-Chief N. American station 1807-14; Admiral 1810 (www.historyofparliamentonline.org).

A previously demolished Stapleford, the Warren Arms, commemorated the family connection with the town.

Designed by Harrison Ince for J.D.Wetherspoon plc. Application 10/00607/FUL to demolish existing health centre (Class D1) and erect public house (Class A4) and associated car parking submitted 1st October 2010 and conditional permission granted on the 3rd of December 2010.

As at November 2017, the freeholds for the Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren (NT36684 & NT23228) were held by J D Wetherspoon plc (Reg. No. 1709784).
