Castle Bar, Holloway

Dec 2021 - A skip outside, the building has been painted black or slate grey, with the name 'M'Nuchah' to the fascia. No information is available, but the word is apparently Hebrew for 'resting place', so perhaps this will become Jewish youth hostel? A picture has been uploaded showing its current state.

We found a planning application from 2018 to grant permission for change of use. Walked by in November 2020 and there was a skip outside and the pub interior was being ripped out. There is a large site to side of pub which also has permission for flats.

It looks like permission was granted on appeal to redevelop to site surrounding the pub. After reading the report it doesn’t mention the pub that much.

“The development proposed is the refurbishment and redevelopment of the existing coach-works and the erection of a four storey building to accommodate new workshop space and ancillary office/administration facilities plus nine residential units.”

“The site is an ‘L’ shaped plot which wraps around the Victorian pub sitting at the corner of Camden Road and Hillmarton Road. This pub, known as The Castle Bar, comprises a main building of three storeys and single storey wings that abut the appeal site at its frontages onto both Camden Road and Hillmarton Road. As far as the appeals are concerned I consider the impact on the Hillmarton Road frontage to be of most importance. This frontage currently consists of a single storey building of little intrinsic architectural merit. The adjacent building to the south east is a single storey, pitched roof industrial unit of utilitarian appearance whilst the flat roofed single storey wing of the pub (with its small extension) lies to the northwest. The wing of the pub is fairly ornate with regularly spaced and heavily decorated arched openings facing onto Hillmarton Road.“

This place closed for a period then re-opened after a re-fit. Subsequently split into a b&b, "392 bar" and "Marisko seafood Restaurant"
