This Pub is Permanently Closed

Demolished on 14/5/2015. Closed 16/11/2013. The near 200-year building's condition was poor, and the pub's tenants Gill and Dave Walker retired from the trade. Planning Application DC/054171 | Demolition of three storey main building, two storey living accommodation and workshop. Granted 30/12/2013.

History:The Tiviot fulfilled its roles as a splendid traditional town centre pub (very handy for Merseyway shopping) and good value lunchtime eatery (12-2 Tue-Sat) with equal aplomb. The vault, with its pictures of old aircraft ‘donated’ to the pub when the RAF office opposite shut decades ago, was one of the few left in the town centre. To the rear was the dining room and at the front a cosy lounge with a long room behind which served as a secondary dining room at lunchtimes. On the walls were photos of steam locos and of old Stockport in which Tiviot Dale predominates, showing the pub serving this neighbourhood, including the nearby now defunct Tiviot Dale station. Although the Tiviot seemed cut off from this hinterland by the road network it had still managed to remain a community pub. The credit for this was due to the landlord who had been here since 1965, the last 30 years as licensee. You could also ask him about the ghost that was in the cellar!

Historic Interest

Due to its prime position near the Lancashire Bridge, it opened as a coaching inn, the Horseshoe in the 18th century. With the coming of the railway to nearby Tiviot Dale, it became the Horseshoe & Railway. Then, turning full circle, it became the Tiviot in 1967 when the station was closed. Next door to the Tiviot, the Station (latterly Inn with a Chance) closed some years prior to the Tiviot. The Tiviot was acquired by Frederic Robinson with the purchase of the Hempshaw Brook Brewery of Bell & Co, in June 1949.
