A good choice of beers from smaller breweries can be found on the many handpulls occupying the bar, all of these are free of tie. Four handpulls are located on the main bar, while another number are on the bar sited in the right hand room. Of these, one will normally be serving Draught Bass.
Four neatly decorated rooms radiate from the congested bar: to he left, two compact snugs; behind the bar, a large lounge with a feature overmantle mirror, which most regulars regard as the best room in the pub; finally, to the right is an overspill room with plenty of standing space. There is a large yard, and attractive outdoor seating area to the rear in the shadow of the iconic, 1838-built railway viaduct.
Historic Interest
Reopened 15/8/2025 with a change of tenant to the successful team at the Petersgate Tap taking the reins. With that change of tenancy, would the Crown see a renaissance of the heady days of 2008 when it was local CAMRA Pub of the Year? Indeed, that capped off a fifteen year period of success being a multi-award winning free house. Sadly, in between that award and the new tenants of 2025, there was an unfortunate period of decline, when its reputation as the premier free house in Stockport was severely tarnished and lay in tatters. Reopened 2/8/2023. Closed 22/7/2023 seeking new tenant. Reopened 11/11/2021. Closed and boarded 1/1/2021 following death of former licensee, Steve Alexander. Local branch Pub of the Year 2008, and runner-up nationally in CAMRA's Pub of the Year for 2009. Originally, the pub began life as a Boddingtons Brewery tied house.
