This Pub is Closed Long Term

Please note that the Racecourse is currently (March 2017) closed and boarded. A notice on the pub is advertising for new tenants - apply to Samuel Smiths Brewery.

Below is the information prior to this:

Reopened on 12th November 2015 as a Sam Smiths pub. Very large pub with wonderful interior, worth a visit if you want to see what a pub used to look like. Built to serve the long demised Manchester Racecourse, hence the size of the bar.

Unfortunately this pub no longer serves real ale.

Won Salford CAMRA branch ‘Neil Richardson’ award for a fine example of a traditional unspoilt pub in 2012.

A mighty brewers’ Tudor pub built 1930 for Groves and Whitnall on the banks of the River Irwell and near to the Manchester Racecourse, which closed in 1963. A 'G&W' monogram with the pub date is visible over the front door.

This huge pub has a little altered planform although some of the fittings have been replaced. Both lobbies have inter-war tiled walls and the main entrance has, unusually, a revolving door. The wood panelled hall runs to the open staircase at the rear and off to the left is a large public bar with one of the largest island bar counters in the country, which, sadly is a replacement and a large plain skylight above. On the right at the end of a wide wood panelled passage is the Vault with old bench seating but new bar fittings. A small completely wood panelled room at the rear left retains original seating. There are delightful stained glass details in many windows. The gents' retains its six original Doulton urinals. The pub won the CAMRA/English Heritage refurbishment award for 2005.

Restoration

A huge brewers Tudor pub built in 1930 to serve the long-gone Manchester Racecourse. Now a Sam Smiths pub with a wonderful interior, it retains most of its original layout of rooms off a long hall. Lobbies have tiled walls and the main entrance has a revolving door. Some fixed seating, the extensive panelling and tiles in the toilets are original. Bar fittings and fireplaces are replacements. The large public bar has one of the largest island counters in the country, which is a replacement, and a large skylight. At the end of a wide wood-panelled passage is the vault with old bench seating. A small wood-panelled room at the rear has original seating. There is delightful stained glass in many windows. The gents' has its six original Doulton urinals. The pub won the CAMRA refurbishment award in 2005. No real ale or meals.
