Hotel & Restaurant *** Highlands & Western Isles pub opening and food service times currently vary nearly on a day-to-day basis, mostly dependent on establishments' access to bar and waiting staff. Hence you will almost certainly see different times than those published here. Please DO NOT send updates to either opening or food service times, as trying to hit a moving target is a waste of our very limited resources. Instead, overall opening and restaurant times will be updated at the next full survey. Your understanding is appreciated. We welcome notifications of 'dog friendliness' however four legs good, two legs better. As you might imagine for a website called WhatPub, the main aim is to highlight the quality of ales. Thus, please include an assessment of a pub's beer(s) when you notify us of its cynophile status! ***.
Now part of Coast and Country Pubs, the Seaview Hotel has got to be the most northerly pub on the UK mainland and is one of the main local outlets for the John O'Groats Brewery. This was formerly located in the old fire station across the road but has relocated down near the harbour.
The 26 rooms are well used by "End to Enders" either beginning their John O'Groats to Lands End (JoGLE), or ending the 838 mile journey (LEJoG) by road - mostly motorway, or 1200 on foot.
Rooms are in the hotel itself, the cottage or the annex over the road with its invigorating power showers. There is a secure lock-up for bicycles. This is THE local pub with two hand pumps and meals served throughout the day. The evening can be very busy and sometimes noisy too.
Ideally located for Gills Bay ferry (3 miles) or the seasonal passenger ferry from John O'Groats quay (300 m) to the Orkney Isles.
Although John O'Groats is considered the most northerly village on the UK mainland, the furthest north is actually Dunnet Head about 14 miles away to the north west, but Duncansby Head, with its impressive sea stacks, is another 2 miles further east and IS the furthest point from Lands End. You learn something every day!
This Pub serves 1 changing beer and 1 regular beer.
