This Pub is Temporarily Closed
Built in 1884 by Meux's Brewery Co Ltd (later Friary Meux) as the Tulip Tree (see plaque on the façade on the upper part of frontage) in a narrow street opposite Richmond Athletic Ground.
The pub closed in 2020 and the freehold bought in 2022. A planning application (23/1743/FUL) for the retention of existing pub with internal reconfiguration was submitted and accepted by Richmond Council in April 2024. The proposal is to update, remodel and modernize the bar/restaurant area and supporting servicing areas with the provision of a new kitchen, upgraded back of house areas, staff welfare facilities and storage at basement level. New male and female toilets are provided at basement level with a new accessible toilet at ground floor level. The design and building work will add sufficient kitchen space/facilities to bring the building into the 21st century and provide a comfortable gastro pub experience. Building and refurbishing work is still ongoing. The pub's name when it reopens may well revert to The Tulip Tree.
Historic Interest
The site falls within the Kew Foot Road Conservation Area. The road takes its name from the old pedestrian route from Richmond to the Kew ferry, which was developed mainly during the 18th and 19th centuries. Kew Foot Road itself is noted to be probably the oldest path in Kew. It was truncated in 1766 but continues as a path through the Royal Botanical Gardens via Love Lane and Holly Walk to the river. The Pub sits along grade II* listed Georgian houses.
