This Pub is Closed Long Term
A large and imposing corner pub in the middle of the village virtually opposite the junction with Station Road and the High Street. The Seven Stars has been a Harvey’s House since 2003. Said to date to 1177 (or possibly 14th century) this Wealden Hall with a medieval crown post supported roof has seen some changes over the years, though the alterations of the 16th and 19th centuries haven’t it appears laid low the ghosts, the most famous of which is known as the Red Monk. There are said to be several poltergeists, shadows and other spirits to keep you company though most activities appear to be in the top room of the house. It is included as one of the top ten most haunted pubs in the country. It is one of the oldest buildings in the village and Grade II* listed. Having been the haunt of 18th Century smugglers (which may account for the stories of nocturnal goings on) the pub is on the Hawkhurst Gang Smugglers Trail. A warm and friendly log fire is usually found smouldering in the open grate, and the welcome behind the bar also with its warmth from the tenants since June 2013.
