Listed in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide every year since 1993, this is a Georgian listed building with bare brick walls and wooden floorboards, comprising two small rooms downstairs and two similar rooms up a steep staircase. The walls throughout are adorned with an interesting selection of old pub mirrors and pictures, as well as what is thought to be the largest UK collection of Blind Jack brasses and other memorabilia. There is also a collection of Good Beer Guides going back over five decades. It is a sociable pub, popular with both locals and visitors who appreciate the excellent selection of ales and friendly ambience. The diverse beer range usually includes draught Bass plus four changing beers from smaller national and Yorkshire breweries, including at least one dark and one gluten free, and there is a range of craft kegs too. The pub often holds beer events such as tap takeovers, including the twice yearly 'Women on Tap' celebrating female brewers. Of particular interest are the life size drawing of the pub’s namesake, Blind Jack Metcalf, on the stairway wall, and the trompe l'œil painting to the exterior of the building.
