This Pub is Permanently Closed
Large ex-Charrington estate pub, with lots of space and seating areas, as well as a very large garden offering many facilities for children's play. Landlord is an experienced hotelier and is keen to cater for private functions, as well as looking to expand his range of real ale and food.
Closed suddenly in October 2016 and illegally demolished without planning consent. Gravesham Council considering enforcement action.
It is to be hoped that Gravesham Council will act in the best interests of the local community in pursuing remedial action, but they are certainly taking their time about it (1/19).
Update 12/23. By declining to take the necessary enforcement action, Gravesham Borough Council have effectively endorsed the criminal demolition of The Battle of Britain. Many local people remain mystified as to why the Council declined to use the powers available to them that could have compelled the guilty party to rebuild the Battle of Britain for the benefit of the local community, who are now left without any sort of social hub over a wide area of the town. The Council have thus passed up an excellent opportunity to send a clear message to unscrupulous profiteers that illegal activity such as this, and the arson attacks that have resulted in the loss of so many of Gravesham pubs, will not be tolerated. To many, this looks like cowardice.
The site now seems likely to be redeveloped into a residential care home.
Historic Interest
Began life in 1947 as a wooden hut - moved into existing building, previously known as Shears Green House, in 1961
