This 300 year old pub on Piel Island is open from April to September and can be reached by passenger ferry from the lifeboat station at Roa Island (see website for prices and times) or by foot from Walney at low tide (be very careful!). Please note that the last ferry back to the mainland will be earlier than the quoted closing time.
The landlord of the Ship Inn has for many years been referred to as the King of Piel. Aaron Sanderson, the current King, was crowned on 3 September 2022.
Historic Interest
Piel Island was given over to the town of Barrow-in-Furness in 1920 by the Duke of Buccleugh as a memorial to those who lost their lives during the First World War.
