Best of the best when it comes to what a pub should be, serving the local community for decades.

Home of the Captain Cook Brewery, this friendly 18th-century pub is located at the west end of this pretty market town. A pleasant welcome is assurred from Emily, who has been the licensee for 8 years, while Alan, the brewer, has been an ever present over the last 12 years.

Considering the history of real ale on Teesside, and the important role that the White Swan and Captain Cook brewery has played, it is fitting that the pub is now the local branch Pub of the Year 2025, and this during the year of the Branch's 50th anniversary, since being founded in 1975.

Has featured in the Good Beer Guide for over 30 consecutive years.

Five beers from the Captain Cook portfolio of ten beers are served, together with three interesting guest beers from other brewers, as well as two ciders, one real and one fruit.

Slipway and Sunset are always available, Endeavour is usually available, whilst there is always a dark beer, either Black Porter or Schooner.

More beers have recently been added to the brewery's portfolio: Sandwich Islands, islands discovered by Captain Cook and named by him after the 4th Earl of Sandwich, brewed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the brewery,

Skippy, in memory of Brian Skipp, who bought the pub in 1989 and started the brewery in 1999. In 2023 Cygnet was added to the range.

In addition to the beers listed, a New Zealand hopped IPA, 'First Voyage' was launched in 2024. During the Easter 2025 Beer Festival, it is hoped that another new beer wil be added to the portfolio.

Beer festivals, (up to 40 casks, with limited space restricting these to 10 additional handpumps at a time), are held during Easter and in October. Craft beers are also available. Nibbles are served on Sunday lunchtimes.

Open-mic night is Tuesday, quiz night is Wednesday, while its live music night on Thursday.

The sheltered outdoor drinking area overlooks the brewery, which is located just behind the pub.

Over-18s only, please.

Dogs are welcome.
