Historic Interest

Delicensed on 14/09/10, landlord was Peter Hewart and Brewery JW Lees. The pub was listed in John Stotts 1977 Guide to Good Beer in Bolton as selling Boddingtons Bitter and Best Mild (H), with darts and Juke Box. Cheapest Pint in Bolton. Just right. Before 1979 it had been a Boddingtons Pub selling Mild and Bitter, But in January 1979 Boddingtons put the pub up for sale and by March it had been bought by JW Lees and in April it was closed whilst it was being repared and refurbished. In February 1980 the pub had not yet reopened as Boddingtons had sold it even though there was a Compulsory Purchase Order on the pub. It was October 1980 when it was reported as having reopened and was selling Lees Best Mild and Bitter (H). It was included on the St Georges day pub crawl of 1981. There was a Branch Meeting held here on December 2nd 1981 when JW Lees Head Brewer Giles Dennis was the speaker. The pub was visited on a Pub Crawl on March 17th, and on the Marathon Pub Crawl on November 1982 when GB Mild had replaced the previous Best Mild. In January 1985 and again in 1986 Lees Moonraker was available and on May 2nd a Social/Committee was held here and later on November 14th the AGM with a social on December 14th 1984. It was listed in the selective Greater Manchester Beer Guide of 1985. A social was held here on March 17th 1986 and a Pub Crawl ended here on September 7th. In Spring of 1987 on a Price Survey the pub had the second cheapest Beer with Mild at 69p and Bitter at 71p, the Moonraker had been 98p earlier in the year. In January 1988 plans were being discussed about extending the pub and creating a car park. A Branch Meeting was held here on April 12th and a Pub Crawl started here on July 3rd 1988. In 1989 a social was held here on February 22nd and a Pub Crawl visited on September 19th. In 1990 the Pub was one of those suggested for a visit in the Beer Festival programme notes and again in 1992. A Branch Meeting was held here on June 28th 1990. It was visited on the Independents Day Pub Crawl on June 17th 1993, June 28th 1994, June 29th 1995. It was mentioned in the Autumn 1993 Elephant and Castle as selling Lees GB Mild and Bitter. Another Branch Meeting was held here on December 5th 1996. In July 2000 it was reported that the pub was now selling the JW Lees seasonal Beers, though a year later they had disappeared. A Branch Meeting was held here on January 13th 2005. It was listed in the Good Beer Guide for 1982 1985 to 1991, 1993 to 2001 and 2005 to 2009. On 09/10/82 Lees Mild was 50p a pint.
