Historic Interest
Delicensed 11/02/10 shows on Council Unoccupied premises rates list as closed on 14/08/09 with Hilary Wilkes as landlady and requested by Chris Henry. Licensed as Gypsy's Tent not Winston's. It was in the Good Beer Guide from 1976 to 1978. In early 1976 it sold Walkers Bitter but by April it was Tetley Bitter. Second meeting to Test Support for the new Bolton Branch held here on November 9th in the upstairs room, complaints about the date because it clashed with Bolton v Burnley (Wanderers won 2-1), some members came along after the match. It was noted that in an article about Bolton Branch that Jennings Bitter had been on sale here during the Tetley Warrington Strike at the time of the Inaugural meeting in December. The branch diary listed the branch meeting being held here on March 24th and again on April 21st 1977. The pub was listed in John Stotts 1977 Guide to Good Beer in Bolton as selling Walker Bitter and Tetley Mild (H), TV Juke Box, darts, pool and snacks. It was also listed by Geoff Breakwell as a good pub to visit article on Bolton Pubs. A branch Pub crawl started here on November 16th 1979. A Branch Meeting was held here on April 8th 1981. In May 1981 it was a Tetley Pub selling Mild and Bitter (H). In August 1981 it was rumoured that the pub was going to be put up for sale, but Tetley's changed their mind and a new tenant was installed, the pub was visited on September 24th after meal at Crompton's Mule. It was included in an article about Bolton Town Centre pubs in April 1982. The Branch AGM was held here on November 10th 1982. A year later Tetley's did put the pub up for sale. It was bought by Bandmatic and Bass North West had a charge for £25,000 on the pub which reopened as Winstons in January 1985 and was selling Bobbingtons Bitter and Stones Bitter. The pub was visited on the St Georges Day Crawl in 1985. By November 1985 Boddingtons Mild and Draught Bass had been added to the choice of beers. In May 1986 the Draught Bass handpump had been moved from the side of the bar to the front and surprise, surprise sales had improved. The pub was included on the suggested town centre Pub Crawl included in the 1987 Great Northwestern Beer Festival Programme. By January 1988 the Draught Bass had gone and soon afterwards so had the Stones Bitter leaving just the Boddingtons Bitter. By March 1989 the pub had closed for refurbishment, in June it was reported that it be called the Gypsy's Tent again and in September it reopened and nodoby could understand why a pair of boots were nailed to a fireplace. In the 1992 Great North Western Beer Festival programme it was listed as selling Websters Yorkshire Bitter plus a guest which had recently been Lees Bitter. By August 1996 the guest beers had ceased and the regular beer was Worthington Bitter.
