This Pub is Closed Long Term

An unspoilt country pub down a narrow lane which has been extended with a conservatory to provide a dining area. There is a traditional bar that is simply furnished with pews and settles on a flagstoned floor, cask ales are served directly from the barrel. The is also a more comfortably furnished lounge.

Popular with walkers and horse riders and owned by the nearby Longleat Estate.

The local community have applied for Asset of Community Value listing, at time of writing (mid-Oct 2026) Somerset Council have yet to make a decision.

Active Campaign

The pub closed six years ago. A campaign to save the pub (known locally as "The Jockey") is being organised by the community group Friends of the Horse and Groom, involving local residents, and supporters, alongside community backing from local historians, families, and Morris dancing sides. They have successfully lobbed Somerset Council to grant the 300-year-old pub Asset of Community Value (ACV) status. They are also organizing community surveys, local fundraising meetings, and public events (such as autumn equinox gatherings) to explore community ownership.
