Museum

The Vulcan was originally a working-class establishment that could lay claim to being one of Cardiff's oldest. It served the predominantly Irish community in what was then called Newtown. It closed in 2012 and was dismantled and rebuilt over four years at St Fagan's National Museum of History, Amgueddfa Cymru-Museum Wales, opening to visitors in May 2024. The brick-by-brick reconstruction using original materials shows the pub as it was in 1915, just after it had undergone a major refurbishment and redesign of its interior. It retains an appealing simplicity of decor and fittings to evoke a pub from the early years of the 20C. It operates as a real pub inside the museum, selling real ale to museum visitors.
