Historic Interest
A report in the Ipswich Journal** in Mar 1810 states that : "The announcement of the marriage on Monday se'nnight (5th) of Mr Malden, of Soham, to Miss Fletcher, of the Cock Inn, Kentford, Suffolk". A report in the Ipswich Journal** on Mar-22 in 1862 when Samual Howell was the landlord states that : "William Collins paid his bill with a cheque, but it was returned to Howell the bank concerned having stopped payment 46 years previously". A report in the Ipswich Journal** on Feb-13 in 1883 when Issac Filby was the landlord states that : "Thomas Martin a saw sharpener was charged with manslaughter of Ann Jameson. The couple had been seen in the Lamb in Newmarket between 9am & 10am. Caroline Norman of the Fox & Ball served them with 3 pints between 11am & 6pm. Soon afterwards Issac Filby of the Cock separated them & took away their beer. They left & a little later Martin returned for brandy to revive her, she died & he was charged. No evidence was found of violence & Martin was acquitted." Parts of building date from about 1600, though it is recorded as early as 1563.
