This remote hotel serves widespread local communities in Matterdale and is welcoming to locals and walkers from the higher level Ullswater roundway which passes by the door. There is a separate bar, which has been sylishly modernised, with a flagstone floor and open fire, a more formal lounge and a dining room.

The well kept garden, wih tables, chairs and umbrellas on the grass, is very sheltered - a rarity in this area of the northern fells. Outside seating is also availabl on the patio at the side of the building.

Locally sourced food is listed on a changing blackboard menu. The lack of mobile signal attracts discerning customers!
