Historic Interest
A timber framed building with an old beamed bar which has been a pub (on & off) since 1544. Before the railway station was built all the land between the pub & river was known as "camping land" - this was the pitch for the popular ball game Campball - a precursor to football dating back to at least 17th cent. Campball was described as a "friendly kind of fight" - a bloody & murderous practice with no restrictions on numbers of players & few rules. It generally degenerated into a brawl. Today local football is still played on part of the former camping land.
It was purchased in February 2012 by Calvors Brewery of Coddenham Green. The pub was sold to new owners in Oct 2020.
