Historic Interest
A former Co-op store (Nottingham Post 21 July 2010), the pub takes its name from the origin of the placename Carlton, which means something along the lines of "Settlement of the Freemen" in Anglo-Saxon. Alternatively, the placename may derive from the name of the first recorded Mercian king, Cearl, who ruled in the early seventh century - which would be a rather ironic inversion of the social hierarchy leading to the name the Freeman.
