Irish themed pub featuring live music and is situated close to the Magistrates' Court. The pub stands on the oldest inn site in Plymouth, where the Abbey Hotel was built after the demolition of the Turk’s Head in 1861. The Jail Ale is supplemented by up to two varying guest ales, such as Salcombe Lifesaver and Shingle Bay or Doom Bar. It was the first Irish-themed pub in the city (1994). The pub tends to attract younger drinkers.

Double-depth plan. 3 storeys; regular 4-window range. 1 original 4-pane hornless sash to 1st floor 3rd from left, otherwise later horned copies. 1st-floor has sill band and string linked to cornices of moulded hoods on consoled pilasters flanking panelled and keyed round arches with moulded imposts. 2nd-floor windows have keyed segmental arches, moulded architraves and sill brackets. Ground floor has full-width moulded entablature over 6-bay arcade of keyed round arches springing from leaf carved capitals and imposts. Windows have nook-shaft jambs and 2-pane fanlights; doorway with panelled doors in taller arch right of centre. INTERIOR: has many original features including moulded and carved plaster ceiling cornices to ground-floor rooms. One of a good group in the historic centre of Plymouth.
