Hotel with Bar open to non residents.

A prominent Georgian 4 star hotel with a comfortable main lounge bar. The entire hotel was extensively renovated in 2022. The inn dates back to at least 1783, when the Norfolk Chronicle reported a meeting there.

Historic Interest

Historically listed as a family & commercial hotel & Posting House & Excise Office. A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 19 Sep in 1821 states that on 4th inst. died. in his 19th year, William, 3rd son of Mr BOWER of the Bell Inn, Saxmundham. In 1823 Royal Mail coaches left from here daily to Yarmouth leaving at 7am. The Shannon (another coach) left for London (at 8am) & to Yoxford every evening at 6pm. In 1830 the "Blue" coach to London (via Woodbridge & Ipswich) left every morning at quarter past six. A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 11 Jun in 1859 states that : Wm. CROWE of the Bell Inn, Saxmundham, announces the addition of 10 sitting & bed-rooms, all of which are large, lofty & airy. In 1912 the inn offered a motor garage & lock-up coach house.
