This pub at the north end of Sutton shopping centre is handy for a quick drink or two before catching the bus home. Rebuilt by Hodgson (a Kingston brewery) in 1907, later a Courage pub then Greene King leased, until the freehold was sold in 2017 to Denton & Co Trustees Ltd. It was the Red Lion until c.2010. Cask ale was restored, with Greene King Abbot and IPA, but has since been discontinued. Sky TV and pool are available.

The pub is widely known as the place where Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman became permanent members of the Rolling Stones, on 23 January 1963. The band played regularly there before being spotted by noted music manager Giorgio Gomelsy,

Historic Interest

Mentioned in 1799, the inscription on the gable ‘Rebuilt in 1907’, and the pargetting (raised patterns in render) date this building to the Arts and Crafts period of domestic architecture. Other typical features of the time are the dormer windows in a red-tiled roof, hanging tiles, white render (including the chimney stacks), bargeboards and casement windows. As the gable inscription shows the pub was previously called The Red Lion. The Rolling Stones played several gigs here and in 1963 were spotted by a music promoter who signed them up for a regular gigs in Richmond, leading a few months later to chart success and fame. Locally Listed (LL73)
