No cask ale currently being served, with only bottled beers sold. This is a free house following its sale in late 2012 by previous owners Punch Taverns. This one-bar pub serves mainly locals and passing trade. Originally dating from 1756 and located further along by the river Lea, it was moved to its current site in 1800.

The Charter Market Quarter has many historical links. One of the only free-standing medieval civic clock towers, the site of the First Battle of St. Albans in 1455, during the Wars of the Roses. Allegedly the Boot Inn played host to soldiers fighting in the battle. There used to be 23 pubs around the Market area!
