This Pub is Closed Long Term

Formerly the Borough Bailiff, it reverted to its earlier name in 2014. This is a largish and slightly upmarket inn belonging to Samuel Smiths. There are two bars, a public entered at the side and a lounge accessed through the main door off the High Street; there is also a large dining room at the back with a real fire in winter, and at the front on the left is the rather grandiose 'Oak Room' with its own real fire. The pub is a Grade II listed building with an old and interesting interior of the sort pub designers have tried to recreate but this one is largely original, if a little redesigned.

Historic Interest

Grade II Listed Building. The borough's bailiff, the principal officer keeping law and order in the town, lived here in the 17th Century; the exterior was refurbished in the 18th Century. The premises has served as an inn since around 1720 under the name of the Commercial Hotel, and only more recently as the Borough Bailiff.
