A popular real ale outlet since the 1970s,hidden away in a side street off the East Barnet Road. The quiet saloon bar is a contrast to the lively public bar which has a TV . There is a garden at the back where you can watch the trains go by.
There is a garden at the rear that houses a Garden room with eclectic furniture. This can also be booked for private functions. Some of the furniture outside is made from recycled pallets. A couple of chairs are made from a few spades, forks and hoes!!
From January 2025 a Thai menu has been introduced. Comedy nights are recently introduced alternating with Fridays and Saturdays music nights.
May close early if quiet.

The Charter Market Quarter has many historical links. One of the only free-standing medieval civic clock towers, the site of the First Battle of St. Albans in 1455, during the Wars of the Roses. Allegedly the Boot Inn played host to soldiers fighting in the battle. There used to be 23 pubs around the Market area!
The northern end of the Market is dominated by St. Peter’s church, one of the three churches originally built by the Saxon’s on the main pilgrim routes into St. Albans. Soak up the history and architecture of the area, as well as music history!
This area is packed with history and interesting pubs, some open, and some no longer with us.
