Original 16th century building with extension to the rear. Two separate adjoining drinking areas where traditional bar meals are available as well as a separate carvery restaurant. The Tudor Room is available for functions and meetings while the whole restaurant is also available for private hire. Low ceilings and plenty of beams and a display of plates, horse brasses and mirrors. Ample parking and good sized outside drinking areas front and back. Online bookings available via Open Table. Underwent major refurbishment in 2019. Licensed for civil ceremonies. Dogs are welcome in the tv bar. Family friendly, children are allowed up to 9pm. Smoking permitted in outside areas, front and rear.
Historic Interest
The woodman Inn was built in 1664 but was probably known as the Tollgate in 1700s.It was purchased by Charles Bradshaw,a Hatfield baker and brewer in 1851,who out to Edward Pryor and Percy Reid in 1888.The premises was shown as a grocers shop as well as a beer retailer during the 19th century and in 1881 the licensee George Dickens also gave his occupation as a gardener.The 1891 census shows George Dickens publican Herriet Dickens wife and Annie Day niece.

The Charter Market Quarter has many historical links. One of the only free-standing medieval civic clock towers, the site of the First Battle of St. Albans in 1455, during the Wars of the Roses. Allegedly the Boot Inn played host to soldiers fighting in the battle. There used to be 23 pubs around the Market area!
The northern end of the Market is dominated by St. Peter’s church, one of the three churches originally built by the Saxon’s on the main pilgrim routes into St. Albans. Soak up the history and architecture of the area, as well as music history!
