Starting Gate, Nottingham

Opened in May 1973 by Home Brewery, whose then owners, the Farr family, had racing interests. The plans by architects Cecil Howitt & Partners were approved on the 10th December 1971. The exterior has timber landlord's accommodation over brick ground floor, with rear single storey timber bar with large plate glass windows and upswept roof overlooking beer garden (where the snooker table now is). The projecting single-storey front bar may have been similar but it has been re-windowed and extended, and inside divided up with brick piers so that the plan is no longer recognisable. This is a shame as bits of the exterior are intriguing. Two bars, running front and back each with a lobby. Also entrances to righthand side (now gone) separating bars from toilets. Behind the counter is a large area with barrel store, case store, stock delivery with double doors, staff entrance and garage, all with flat over - the bars have upsailing roofs. In February 1992 an amended plan for a new bar extension and internal alterations by Danyl Interiors of Thundersley, Essex were approved (Elain Harwood / Historic England).
