Situated in the heart of the town, this centuries-old inn closed in November 2013 when named The Salisbury. A grade II listed building dates from the 16th century, when it was one of several inns on the High Street, providing refreshment for travellers on the main road north from London. Taken over by Wetherspoons, during renovation murals from the time of the Tudor Queen Elisabeth I were discovered. They are now preserved and detailed plaques explains their importance. A visit to the upstairs toilets are a must, as apart from being plush, they have exposed beams, brickwork and wattle and daub wall panelling from the Tudor period. The Star name is the original from the 16th century.
