Historic Interest

A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 09 Oct in 1805 states that : "Matthew SPILLING, from the Red Lion, Barrow & formerly the Green Man, Bury, has taken the Spread Eagle Inn Bury & would like to thank the friends of Mr MARLEY, for the support he has received." A report in the Bury & Norwich Post** on 23 Oct in 1805 states that : "Matthew SPILLING, from the Red Lion, Barrow & formerly of the Green Dragon of this town, returns thanks especially to Mr MARLEY (and) has taken the Spread Eagle Inn now fitted up the same with good Beds & other accommodations very extensive Stabling for Horses & the same Hostler kept." A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 17 Aug in 1808 states that : "Notice to debtors & creditors of Mr Matthew SPILLING, late of the Spread Eagle Inn, BSE (Bury St Edmunds)" A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 14 Sep in 1836 states that : "Thursday last, being the day for granting annual licences to the victualers & innkeepers of this borough (BSE), the former number of 51 were reviewed by the magistrates. There were also several applications for new licences but only 2 were granted. Namely, one for Mr Frederick CLARK, Jun. for the house at the corner of Angel Hill (formerly the Cock & Pie) & the other to Mr BUCKLE, for the beer-house called the Spread Eagle at Stamford Bridge." May also be listed at Standford Bridge (1839) & on Westgate Rd & at 1 West St (in 1855) & 1 Horringer rd (in 1891).
