Traditional family-run rural pub with lots of character, from wooden beams, low ceilings and large fire places. Surrounded by well maintained walks and in beautiful surroundings. Parking is on the left at the back of the pub in a field. Pub holds regular calendar of events.

Historic Interest

A report in the Bury & Norwich Post on Dec-26 in 1838 states that the pub was part of the sale of Samuel Alexander's Brewery, the Oyster selling at £820. A report in the Ipswich Journal on 25 Jun in 1853 states that : The Oyster Inn, Butley to be sold by auction. Mr John THURLOW, the Proprietor & his family have occupied this Inn for the last 25 years & he now only leaves in consequence of having engaged a farm. Closed in Dec 2012.

In April 2020 it was reported by the EADT that the pub is reopening, though at present only the shop is operating, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. A further report in July told us that reopening had been deferred and it may be another six months before it reopens as a pub. The shop continued to operate as a lifeline for the villagers. It was observed to have reopened late in May 2021.
