A planning application was made on 16/04/2018 for Listed Building Consent to keep some of the façades but otherwise demolish and build a new 87 bedroomed hotel. Planning was passed at local level despite recommendation against from the Historic Environment Division. This led to the decision being called in for re-assessment by the Department for Infrastructure in August 2019. As of May 2022 the plans have been revised to an 83 bedroomed 'heritage-led' design but the application is still awaiting final approval. If planning is granted the works should be complete by early 2025

In the meantime the Atlantic Lounge has continued to operate while the planning is undecided.
