A single room, dog-friendly pub that has been extensively renovated with pleasant, contemporary decor though the real fire has been retained. On the walls are famous beer-related quotes and old photos of the local area. A novel feature is the pages from 1936 editions of the Pontefract Advertiser form the wallpaper in the toilets! Three real ales are on offer. Much of the garden is covered and the ‘Whiskey Shed’ at its end is open from 6pm Fri and Sat.

Historic Interest

The Hope and Anchor name originally belonged to a pub in Horsefair (1834); The original building was a dwelling house converted to a public house around 1805 and was Carter's Knottingley Brewery's first house outside Knottingley. It was rebuilt 1892 to a design by Pontefract architect, J.H. Greaves, with a parapet gable and barge board trimming. Innovative for that time was that the building was sound and damp proofed, with ½" cavity walls filled with a patented compound known as ‘Tenax Building Rock’. It was the brewery's showpiece pub.
