Originally called the New Inn and renamed as the Melbourne Hotel in the 1880s. It is now called Harpur's, after the Harpur Crewes at nearby Calke Abbey. It started life on Potter Street and dates from 1773. It was bought by the Melbourne Estate in 1830 and in 1858 the Derby Road frontage was added possibly to the designs of Derby architect Henry I. Stevens. As the main accommodation in the town, a horse and trap plied between here and the railway station in the late 19th century. It now offers two bars, a restaurant and a small hotel business. Now serving beers from the Boot brewery.
