George Inn, Robertsbridge

The George is an imposing red tiled fronted building that faces down towards the centre of the village. This is an 18th-century coaching inn where you will always find a warm welcome. There is a good sized comfortable bar with a dining area to the left. The food is home-cooked, seasonal and sourced locally where possible. The bar has a warming inglenook fireplace along with views down across the High Street and of the distinctive War Memorial clock tower, erected in 1926, that commemorates those who lost their lives in the two World Wars of the 20th century. In earlier years Hillaire Belloc was a frequent visitor, and wrote the early chapters of ‘Four Men’ here. The book begins ‘Nine years ago, as I was sitting in the George at Robertsbridge, drinking that port of theirs and staring at the fire ……’

In modern times the pub was the top scorer in the local branch area in the National Beer Scoring Scheme for 2023, a presentation picture above shows two staff members behind the bar accepting the award on behalf of landlady Alison. The other picture shows Alison outside the pub being presented with the notification that the pub was in the Good Beer Guide for the first time under her management in 2024.
