It's good to see that the historic Royal Hotel is now in safe hands real ale wise. Currently still undergoing a massive refurbishmant scheme by the HRH Group, with the hotel bar, the Fat Badger, having had a degree of priority.

The Fat Badger pub, just to the right of the hotel's reception, is now up and running, serving eight real ales, along the lines of the Fat Badgers in Harrogate and York. Only recently opened but already attracting a discerning clientele.

This fine Victorian hotel is located on West Cliff, at the top of the Khyber Pass and close to the whale bones. It provides superb views, reasonably priced accommodation in 140 bedrooms, eight real ales and an extensive food menu.

The house beer, Fat Badger, is Tetley Bitter. There is a mix of regular beers and a guest rotation policy that ensures that there are alternative beers available in the town to avoid some element of duplication. Serves a range of beers from light session beers to stouts.

A brunch menu starts at 10am while the full menu starts at 12 noon. The kitchen is noted for its Yorkshire specialities, where the food is locally sourced where possible.
